In this class you will learn how to dye using natural textiles and natural dyes. We will use flowers, roots, leaves, exotic dyes, medicinal plants and even food waste to make a vibrant rainbow of natural color on an organic cotton tee shirt. You will learn some simple shibori techniques (Japanese art of folding and dyeing) and the classic tie dye swirl to make beautiful patterns on your fabric.
You will be provided with test strips of different fabrics to experiment with color. You may also bring an item of clothing that you want to dye, perhaps something that is stained or needs new life breathed into it. It must be a natural fiber, as polyester doesn’t take up natural dye.
You will learn how to make your own dye pot at home and you will leave with a new understanding of the clothes we wear and the power of the natural world.
